Steamed Mackerel with Egg Yolk for Adult Cats

Steamed mackerel enriched with egg yolk: a meal rich in omega-3, protein, and taurine, designed to stimulate the appetite of adult cats and support their coat and skin.

Time ~20 min
Portions 2

Mackerel is an inexpensive blue fish that is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain a shiny coat and healthy skin. When combined with a cooked egg yolk — a small source of taurine, B vitamins, and healthy fats — it becomes a delicious and nutritious meal for the adult cat. Steaming preserves the nutrients and does not add unnecessary fats.

Ingredients

  • 120 g of fresh mackerel fillet, boneless
  • 1 medium egg yolk
  • 2-3 tablespoons of cooking water

Instructions

  1. Carefully check the mackerel fillet and remove any bones by running your fingers along the flesh.
  2. Steam the mackerel for 8-10 minutes, until the flesh flakes easily.
  3. Meanwhile, cook the yolk: immerse it in boiling water in the shell for 7 minutes, then cool and shell it. Cooking the egg eliminates the risk associated with raw egg white.
  4. Flake the mackerel with a fork, removing any skin if the cat has difficulty digesting it.
  5. Mash the cooked yolk and mix it with the mackerel, adding a few tablespoons of cooking water to achieve a soft consistency.
  6. Serve warm, never hot.

Notes

Mackerel should be offered as an occasional meal, not daily: blue fish contains thiaminase, an enzyme that can reduce vitamin B1 over time, so it should be alternated with meat. Do not add salt, oil, or spices. Raw egg white contains avidin and must always be cooked. This recipe is a tasty supplement, not a complete food: always refer to your veterinarian for daily diet planning.

Storage

It can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Heat slightly in a water bath before serving. Freezing the prepared dish with the yolk is not recommended, as it tends to become grainy.
