This homemade bone broth made from chicken wings is a very simple recipe but packed with benefits. Cooked slowly and gently with simple vegetables, it releases collagen, gelatin, and minerals that support joints, the gut, and hydration. A convenient weekly preparation that can be frozen and used as a topper for meals or to soften kibble.
Ingredients
- 900 g of chicken wings
- 1.9-2.9 liters of water (8-12 cups)
Optional additions:
- 2 carrots
- 1-2 tablespoons of unfiltered apple cider vinegar (15-30 ml)
- 1 stalk of celery
Procedure
- Place the chicken wings in a large pot and cover with water. Add the vegetables and apple cider vinegar if desired.
- Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid, and let simmer for at least 4 hours, up to a maximum of 20 hours.
- Strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer to remove bones and debris, then remove the excess fat that rises to the surface.
- Allow to cool completely before transferring to storage containers.
Notes
The apple cider vinegar helps extract minerals and collagen from the bones. A gelatinous consistency when cold is a great sign: it indicates a broth rich in gelatin. Daily portions typically range from about 60 ml for very small dogs to 240-470 ml for large dogs. Always check to ensure it does not contain salt, onion, or garlic.
Storage
In the refrigerator in an airtight container for 5 days, or frozen in cubes for 3-4 months.
