Sugar-Free Gingerbread Cookies for Dogs

Christmas cookies shaped like gingerbread men designed for dogs. Sugar-free and nutmeg-free, flavored with ginger, molasses, and apple. Perfect for the holidays together.

Time ~40 min
Portions 20

Your dog can also join in the holiday magic with his gingerbread cookies. This homemade version eliminates sugar, additives, and especially nutmeg, which is toxic to dogs. Molasses provides natural sweetness, while ginger adds warmth to the flavor. It's a fun recipe to prepare together on cold days.

Ingredients

  • 300 g of oat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon of ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed
  • 2 and a half tablespoons of water
  • 60 ml of molasses
  • 80 ml of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and spices.
  2. Mix the ground flaxseed with the water and let it sit for 2 minutes until it forms a gel.
  3. Add the molasses, flax gel, and applesauce to the mixture.
  4. Incorporate the vanilla and mix until you achieve a compact dough, adding more flour if needed.
  5. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1.3 cm and cut out the cookies in the shape of little men using a cookie cutter.
  6. Bake in the oven at 175 degrees for 20-25 minutes, until the edges start to brown for soft cookies, or longer for crispy cookies.

Notes

Never add nutmeg: even small amounts can cause gastrointestinal disturbances in dogs. They can be served with a dollop of unsweetened whipped coconut cream.

Storage

They can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for 5 days or in the freezer for up to 90 days.
