Holidays are more beautiful when your dog also has a tasty surprise. These biscuits are reminiscent of classic gingerbread but are designed to be suitable for dogs: only ingredients safe for human consumption, no refined sugar, and a well-measured amount of spices. Molasses, in small amounts, gives a toasted flavor and a natural sweet note, while ginger in moderate doses can aid digestion.

Ingredients

  • 150 g of whole wheat flour
  • 100 g of all-purpose flour
  • 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of ground ginger
  • 1.25 ml (1/4 teaspoon) of ground cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 22 ml (1.5 tablespoons) of molasses
  • 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the two flours, ginger, and cinnamon, mixing with a whisk.
  3. Add the eggs, molasses, and water, and mix with a wooden spoon until you obtain a compact dough.
  4. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead briefly with your hands to make it uniform.
  5. Roll out to a thickness of about half a centimeter and cut out shapes with cookie cutters of your choice.
  6. Place the biscuits on the baking sheet, spacing them about 2-3 cm apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the edges start to brown.
  8. Let the biscuits rest on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes, then cool completely on a rack.

Notes

You can enrich the dough with a tablespoon of pumpkin or sweet potato puree, or add a pinch of chopped parsley for a refreshing effect on breath. If your dog is used to unsweetened peanut butter, a teaspoon is also a great addition.

Storage

Once cool, store the biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week. In the fridge, they last a few days longer but become slightly softer.
