Shepherd's Pie for Dogs: Beef and Potato Casserole

A dog-friendly twist on the classic shepherd's pie: ground beef, wholesome vegetables, and a fluffy layer of mashed potatoes. A complete meal that's easy to batch-cook and portion out for the whole week.

Time ~50 min
Portions 6

Shepherd's pie is a comforting dish that adapts beautifully for dogs. This version combines ground beef, vegetables and a layer of mashed potatoes, and is formulated for adult dog maintenance. It's perfect for anyone who loves to cook once and divide meals over the following days, keeping everything simple and balanced. The natural supplements added at the end of cooking (salmon, seeds, liver, algae calcium) help balance minerals and fatty acids: don't skip them if you want to use this recipe as a complete meal.

Ingredients

  • 454 g ground beef (approximately 15% fat)
  • 75 g white potatoes, diced
  • 240 ml water
  • 75 g carrots, diced
  • 75 g peas
  • 57 g corn (alternatively, green bell pepper)
  • 100 g canned salmon in water, no salt added
  • 39 g ground sunflower seeds
  • 10 g hulled hemp seeds
  • 10 g freeze-dried beef liver
  • 6.7 g algae calcium (supplement)
  • 5 g nutritional yeast flakes
  • 1.5 g dulse seaweed flakes

Method

  1. Boil the potatoes until fork-tender, then mash them and set aside.
  2. In a pan over medium heat, cook the ground beef together with the 240 ml of water, carrots, peas and corn for 15–20 minutes, until the meat is fully cooked.
  3. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
  4. Once the mixture is cool, stir in the salmon, ground sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, freeze-dried beef liver, algae calcium, nutritional yeast and dulse flakes. Mix well.
  5. Spread the mashed potatoes over the surface of the meat mixture, smoothing them out to cover everything.
  6. Portion and serve to your dog.

Notes

This recipe is designed for adult dog maintenance: the algae calcium and freeze-dried liver provide important minerals, while the salmon and seeds supply omega fatty acids. Do not add salt or seasonings. The supplement quantities should be followed carefully to keep the meal balanced. For puppies, pregnant females or dogs with health conditions, always consult your vet before switching to a home-cooked diet.

Storage

Divide into portions and refrigerate for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 60 days. It's a good idea to portion before freezing, so you can thaw only the amount you need.
