Boiled Whole Chicken for Dogs: Nutritious Recipe

Simple method to prepare boiled whole chicken for your dog. Gentle cooking in water that preserves essential nutrients, perfect for weekly meal prep.

Time ~120 min
Portions 12

Cooking a whole chicken is one of the most nutritious ways to prepare fresh meals for your dog at home. Stewing on low heat retains a greater amount of nutrients compared to baking. The cooking broth absorbs valuable minerals and amino acids, making it an extraordinary addition to your furry friend's meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken (without seasonings)
  • Enough water to completely cover the chicken

Method

  1. Remove any ties from the chicken; you can keep or remove the insides.
  2. Fill a large pot with enough water to completely submerge the chicken.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  4. Cook for about 90-120 minutes, until the meat is tender and easily pulls away from the bone.
  5. Remove the chicken and let it cool.
  6. Carefully remove all the bones, checking for any fragments before serving.
  7. Shred the chicken and divide it into portions in containers.
  8. Do not discard the cooking water: strain it and keep it as homemade broth, great for meals or freeze it in cubes.

Notes

Boiled chicken is high in protein, easy to digest, and gentle on the stomach, ideal for sensitive dogs. The skin contains healthy fats but can be removed to reduce the fat content if necessary. Always check for the absence of cooked bones before serving: they can splinter and pose risks.

Storage

Shredded chicken can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 3 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months. The broth lasts in sealed jars for 3-4 days in the refrigerator or 2 months in the freezer.
