Dried Beef Strips for Cats

Thin oven-dried lean beef strips: a single-ingredient, 100% meat snack that's chewy and packed with protein. The natural treat for food-loving cats.

Time ~210 min
Portions 25

Just like chicken, lean beef can also become a natural, healthy treat simply by drying it out. No additives, no preservatives: just meat, packed with protein and full of the rich flavour cats love. The strips are slightly chewy and break apart easily into small pieces, making them handy for play and training too.

Ingredients

  • 200 g of lean beef (e.g. topside or silverside), in a single piece

Method

  1. Trim away every trace of visible fat: fat doesn't dry well and will turn rancid.
  2. Place the meat in the freezer for 20–30 minutes to firm it up and make it easier to slice.
  3. Cut thin strips, about 3 mm thick, slicing along the grain.
  4. Arrange them spaced apart on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  5. Dry in the oven at 90–100 °C with the door slightly ajar for 3–4 hours, turning them halfway through, until they are dry but still slightly flexible.
  6. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Notes

Use only lean meat: fat reduces shelf life. Check that the strips are thoroughly dry to prevent mould. Break them into small pieces suitable for your cat. Even though it is pure meat, it is still a treat: no more than 10% of daily calorie intake. Always keep fresh water available, as dry treats do not provide hydration.

Storage

In an airtight glass jar, fully dry, for up to 2 weeks; in the freezer for up to 3 months. If they absorb any moisture, briefly pop them back in the oven.
