Cod and Potato Mash for Kittens

A soft, delicate cod and potato mash that's easy for weaning kittens to digest — featuring the light protein of white fish and a smooth, velvety texture.

Time ~30 min
Portions 3

Cod is a lean, white fish that is very easy to digest, making it suitable even for kittens who are just discovering solid food. Combined with a little boiled potato, which softens the texture, it becomes a smooth and delicate purée — a meat-free alternative to help vary flavours during weaning. This recipe is intended for kittens who have already begun transitioning to solid food, following your vet's guidance.

Ingredients

  • 100 g boneless cod fillet
  • 20 g boiled potato
  • 200 ml water

Method

  1. Check the fillet very carefully and remove any bones.
  2. Cook the cod in water over a gentle heat for 12–15 minutes, until it flakes easily.
  3. Boil a small piece of potato separately until soft.
  4. Drain the fish, reserving the cooking liquid, check once more for any bones, then blend the cod and potato together, adding water until you have a smooth cream.
  5. Serve lukewarm; for very young kittens the consistency should be almost liquid.

Notes

Checking for bones is essential when feeding kittens. The potato is simply a binding agent — fish is the key ingredient. During weaning, mother's milk or a milk replacer remains essential until your vet confirms a full transition to solid food. Fish should always be cooked and offered in moderation. This is a transitional food, not a complete diet for growth.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Can be frozen in single portions for up to 2 months. Warm in a bain-marie and check that the temperature is lukewarm before serving.
