Shrimp are a treat that many cats absolutely love: they are lean, rich in protein and taurine, the essential amino acid that supports your cat's heart and vision. Steamed and cut into small pieces, they make a special reward to offer in modest amounts. Their firm texture and sea-fresh scent make them simply irresistible.
Ingredients
- 4–5 fresh or plain frozen shrimp (approximately 60 g)
Method
- If frozen, thaw the shrimp in the refrigerator.
- Peel the shrimp completely and remove the dark intestinal vein running along the back.
- Steam them (or cook in unsalted water) for 3–4 minutes, until they turn pink and firm. Never serve them raw.
- Allow to cool slightly, then cut into small pieces suitable for your cat.
- Serve a few pieces as a treat.
Notes
Use only plain shrimp — never seasoned, salted, or packed in brine. They must always be cooked and thoroughly cleaned. These are an occasional snack, not a meal: some sources recommend offering them no more than 1–2 times per week. If it is your cat's first time trying shrimp, offer just a small piece and watch for any reactions, as crustaceans can trigger allergies in sensitive individuals.
Storage
Keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day (cooked crustaceans do not keep for long). It is best to prepare them fresh each time. Alternatively, freeze the cooked pieces in single-serving portions for up to 1 month.
