The muzzle is one of the most feared tools by owners, but one of the most important for the dog's safety (public transport, veterinary visits, crowded places). The secret: get him used to it through play, not force.
When It's Really Needed
In Italy, by law:
- Always available (the owner must have it with them)
- Mandatory on public transport, in healthcare facilities, in crowded places upon request
Practically:
- Veterinary visits (even if not aggressive)
- Train/airplane travel
- Crowds, events
- Dog in the socialization phase
The Right Muzzle: Basket Muzzle
Never a "tube" muzzle (it prevents breathing, panting, and drinking).
Basket muzzle:
- The dog can breathe, drink, and take snacks
- Visibly "human" towards other owners
- Suitable for prolonged use
Cost: €15-40.
The Right Size
Measurements to take:
- Muzzle length (from the tip of the nose to the base of the eyes)
- Muzzle circumference (above the nose)
Margin: length +1 cm, circumference +2 cm.
The Play Method (4 weeks)
Week 1: The Muzzle = A Good Thing
- Leave it in the living room, near the bed
- Let him sniff it, help him discover what it is made of
- Put a snack inside (lollipop, pâté): he sticks his nose in to get it
- Reward + sweet voice
- 3-4 times a day, 30 seconds each
Week 2: Nose Inside for Longer
- Put the muzzle on with pâté inside
- Hold it in your hand, he eats the pâté with his nose inside
- 5 seconds → 10 seconds → 20 seconds
- Extra reward as soon as he takes his nose out
Week 3: Closure Without Stress
- Quick closure (1 second) → opening → snack
- Increase to 2, 5, 10 seconds
- Never force: if he shows discomfort, go back
- Reward every moment of calm
Week 4: Walk with Muzzle
- Wear it at home for 1 minute, then remove it
- Wear it to go out into the garden briefly
- Short walk with muzzle
- Constant reward
After 4 weeks: muzzle = "the thing we wear to do nice things".
What NOT to Do
- ❌ Force the muzzle the first time at the vet (permanent negative association)
- ❌ Leave it on for hours (maximum 1-2 hours at a time)
- ❌ Use it as a punishment
- ❌ Cheap tube models: not safe
When to Remove It
- If the dog is panting intensely
- If he drinks excessively
- If it is hot (risk of overheating)
- After 1-2 hours of continuous use
Conclusions
The muzzle is not a punishment, it is a safety tool. With 4 weeks of positive training, the dog will willingly accept it. It is an investment that is worth it even just for less stressful veterinary visits.
