Sardine Pâté for Cats

A creamy sardine pâté packed with omega-3s, calcium, and taurine — a wonderfully aromatic topper to add to your cat's meal or spread as an occasional treat.

Time ~10 min
Portions 8

Sardines are a small nutritional treasure: rich in omega-3s for coat and joint health, taurine for heart and vision, and — when used whole — calcium from their tiny soft bones. This pâté is incredibly simple and has an aroma that few cats can resist. Use it as a topper on your cat's regular meal or as a spreadable treat, in small amounts.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of sardines in water (no salt, no oil), approximately 90 g drained
  • 1 tablespoon of water

Method

  1. Drain the sardines very thoroughly from their liquid.
  2. Mash them with a fork: the bones in canned sardines are soft and safe, and rich in calcium. Remove them if you prefer.
  3. Add a tablespoon of water and work into a smooth, spreadable pâté.
  4. Serve a teaspoon on top of the meal as a topper, or spread a thin layer on a lick mat.

Notes

Use only sardines in water, never in oil or salted. Oily fish is excellent but should be offered in moderation (1–2 times a week) and alternated with meat, to avoid excess thiaminase and heavy metals. This pâté is a tasty supplement, not a complete meal. Introduce it gradually to cats that are not used to eating fish.

Storage

Keep in the refrigerator in a sealed glass jar for up to 2 days. You can freeze it in small portions in silicone moulds and thaw one portion as needed.
