Senior Meal of Sardines, Rice, and Carrots

A senior meal with fresh sardines, rice, and carrots. A natural source of omega-3 and calcium, beneficial for the bones and joints of older dogs.

Time ~35 min
Portions 4

The senior meal of sardines, rice, and carrots is an original recipe to integrate omega-3 and calcium into the diet of an older dog. Sardines, consumed whole and cleaned well, provide useful minerals that support joints, which are often stressed by age.

Ingredients

  • 200 g of cleaned fresh sardines
  • 120 g of white rice
  • 150 g of carrots
  • 80 g of zucchini
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 bunch of fresh parsley

Method

  1. Clean the sardines: remove the head, entrails, and the central backbone. Rinse them well under cold running water.
  2. Steam the sardines for 10 minutes, then check further by feeling them with your fingers to identify and remove any small remaining bones.
  3. Cook the rice in unsalted water following the times indicated on the package, generally 14-16 minutes.
  4. Wash the vegetables, cut everything into small cubes, and steam for 7 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, mash the sardines with a fork and mix them with the rice and vegetables.
  6. Add the EVO oil and chopped parsley, stir, and let it cool down slightly.

Notes

Sardines are one of the most sustainable and richest sources of omega-3 (EPA and DHA), which contribute to joint and cognitive well-being in older dogs. It is essential to remove every bone with great care: even a small bone can cause problems. Offer this meal once a week, alternating it with meat-based recipes.

Storage

In the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Freezing is not recommended to avoid altering the flavor.
