Warm Mackerel & Sweet Potato Cream for Senior Cats

A soft, warm cream crafted for older cats with sensitive teeth or a reduced appetite. Mackerel delivers omega-3s and taurine, while sweet potato provides energy and a velvety texture that's easy to swallow.

Senior cats often have particular needs: more sensitive teeth, a variable appetite, and less efficient digestion. A warm, fragrant cream can entice them to eat again, especially when it is rich in omega-3s like this mackerel-based recipe. Sweet potato, steamed and puréed, provides a soft, easily digestible base, while fish broth boosts hydration — essential for the kidney health of older cats.

Ingredients

  • 120 g fresh mackerel fillet (or canned in water, no salt added, well rinsed)
  • 80 g steamed sweet potato
  • 4–5 tablespoons unsalted fish broth (or fish cooking water)
  • 1 teaspoon fish oil (optional, for an omega-3 boost)

Method

  1. Rinse the mackerel fillet thoroughly under cold running water. If using fresh mackerel, check carefully for bones by hand or with tweezers.
  2. Steam the mackerel for 8–10 minutes, until the flesh turns opaque and flakes easily. Reserve the cooking water for the broth.
  3. Steam the peeled, diced sweet potato for 15–20 minutes, until completely tender.
  4. In a bowl, mash the sweet potato with a fork. Add the hand-flaked mackerel, carefully removing any remaining bones.
  5. Pour in 4–5 tablespoons of warm cooking water and stir vigorously until you obtain a smooth, velvety cream. If a softer consistency is needed, add more water a little at a time.
  6. Allow to cool to body temperature before serving, with an optional drizzle of fish oil.

Notes

Mackerel is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support joint health and skin condition in older cats. Use fresh mackerel whenever possible, or canned in water with no salt added: always avoid mackerel preserved in flavoured oil or brine. Do not use tuna as a regular staple due to its mercury content. Sweet potato is preferable to white potato because it has a lower glycaemic index. If your senior cat has a known kidney condition, consult your vet before introducing fish-rich recipes.

Storage

The cream can be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 days in a sealed container. To reheat, use a bain-marie or add a few tablespoons of warm water and stir: do not use the microwave at full power, as this can create dangerously hot spots. It is better to prepare small fresh portions rather than freeze, as the texture tends to separate.
