Cats are naturally low drinkers, and staying hydrated is essential for their kidneys. A white-fish broth — made with cod, for example — is a fragrant, light way to encourage them to take in more fluids. Cod is lean and mild: the broth can be poured warm over dry kibble to make it more appealing, or frozen into cubes as a refreshing snack.
Ingredients
- 100 g of cod fillet (or other lean white fish), bone-free
- 500 ml of water
Method
- Check the fillet carefully and remove every bone.
- Place the fish in the water, with no salt or seasonings, and bring to a gentle boil.
- Simmer for 12–15 minutes, then remove from the heat.
- Strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve. You can flake the cooked fish and use it in another recipe.
- Allow to cool. Pour the warm broth over your cat's meal, or freeze it in an ice-cube tray.
Notes
Check extremely carefully that no bones remain, even in the strained broth. No salt, onion, garlic or stock cubes. White fish is milder than oily fish and generally well tolerated, but it remains a supplement: basic hydration comes from fresh water available at all times and, ideally, wet food. Introduce gradually for cats that are not used to fish.
Storage
Keep in a glass container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Store as cubes in the freezer for up to 3 months: thaw and serve warm, never hot.
