The Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is one of the most powerful and balanced dogs that exist. Born in Germany as a working dog, particularly serving butchers for livestock herding and guarding, it is today a loyal and reliable companion for those who know how to handle it competently and responsibly.

Appearance

  • Male: 50-60 kg, 61-68 cm at the withers
  • Female: 35-48 kg, 56-63 cm
  • Coat: short, black and tan
  • Life expectancy: approximately 9-11 years

The structure is massive and muscular, a symbol of its strength.

Character

In properly selected lines, it is a calm, balanced, and extremely loyal dog, a natural guardian, and at the same time gentle with its family. It is reserved with strangers and possesses a strong protective instinct, which must always be channeled through safe and consistent guidance.

Training: a serious and non-deferred commitment

Due to its power, the Rottweiler requires:

  • Professional training, ideally starting at 4 months
  • Early and intensive socialization
  • 1.5-2 hours of exercise daily
  • An experienced and balanced owner

The physical strength of this dog does not forgive training mistakes: "do-it-yourself" improvisation is strongly discouraged. A well-trained Rottweiler is a wonderful companion; a poorly managed one can become a serious problem.

Not just a guard dog: a versatile dog

Today, a well-selected and properly trained Rottweiler is also employed in utility activities, from search and rescue to, in some cases, as a therapy dog: a demonstration of how balance and gentleness can coexist with its physical imposingness. For this reason, the evaluation of the character of the breeders, by serious and responsible breeders, is as important as health tests: balanced temperament and health go hand in hand.

Health

Among the breed predispositions:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • tumors, particularly osteosarcoma, to which the breed is predisposed
  • Gastric torsion (bloat): a veterinary emergency to be aware of and prevent with smaller meals and rest after eating

Regular check-ups and attention to signals are fundamental.

Who is it suitable for

It is an extraordinary dog for dedication, balance, and loyalty, but suited for aware owners willing to invest time and energy in training with the support of a professional. It is not recommended as a first breed or for those who cannot guarantee firm and competent guidance.
