L'Hovawart: A Breed with Ancient Nobility

The Hovawart is a breed that guards an ancient nobility: mentioned in medieval German texts as early as 1210, it was the guard dog of farms and castles. Almost extinct in the 19th century, it was "reconstructed" in the early 20th century by passionate zoologists.

Origins

The name means "guardian of the courtyard" in Old German. Documented since the Middle Ages, it was recreated in the 1920s by a group of German dog enthusiasts, crossing surviving farm dogs with similar breeds (German Shepherd, Leonberger, Newfoundland). FCI recognized it in 1937.

Appearance

  • Height: 58-70 cm at the withers.
  • Weight: 25-45 kg.
  • Coat: long, slightly wavy. Allowed colors: black, black and tan, blonde.
  • Life expectancy: 10-14 years.

Character

  • Balanced: stable, never nervous.
  • Vigilant: excellent alarm dog, natural defender.
  • Affectionate: very sweet with family.
  • Suspicious of strangers: but controlled, never aggressive without reason.
  • Intelligent: an independent thinker, needs to be convinced, not forced.
  • Slow maturation: 3-4 years for full maturity.
  • With children: excellent if raised together.

Requirements

  • Exercise: medium-high. 2 hours a day of physical and mental activity.
  • Space: ideally a garden. Adapts well in cities with many outings.
  • Companionship: loves family, suffers from loneliness.
  • Grooming: brushed 2-3 times a week.

Education

The Hovawart does not respond to "no" based training. A relationship of trust must be built, with consistency, gentle firmness, and plenty of socialization. It is very sensitive to tone of voice: a harsh voice will shut it down. Great for IGP (German working dog sport) or canine therapy.

Health

Generally healthy breed. Predispositions: hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, occasionally heart disease. Serious breeders test their breeding stock.
