Mackerel, Rice, and Zucchini Porridge

A porridge with a sea flavor featuring fresh mackerel, rice, and zucchini. Rich in omega-3 and high-quality proteins, great for those who want to alternate between meat and fish.

Time ~30 min
Portions 4

The mackerel, rice, and zucchini meal is an ideal weekly preparation to incorporate omega-3 fatty acids into your dog's diet. Mackerel is an economical, sustainable, and nutrient-rich blue fish, often underestimated as an ingredient for homemade meals.

Ingredients

  • 220 g of fresh or thawed mackerel fillet
  • 120 g of white rice
  • 180 g of zucchini
  • 80 g of carrots
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 bunch of fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Cook the rice in unsalted water according to the package instructions (usually 14-16 minutes).
  2. Check the mackerel fillet for any bones by feeling it with your fingers and removing any spine with tweezers.
  3. Steam the mackerel for 10 minutes, until it flakes with a fork.
  4. Wash the zucchini and carrots, cut them into small cubes, and steam them for 7-8 minutes.
  5. Drain the rice and place it in a bowl with the vegetables and flaked mackerel.
  6. Add EVO oil and parsley, mix gently, and allow to cool slightly.

Notes

Mackerel provides omega-3, vitamin D, and selenium in higher amounts compared to many other fish. It is essential to remove every bone before cooking to avoid choking hazards or injuries. Offer this meal 1-2 times a week, alternating it with meat-based recipes. Fresh mackerel should be consumed within 24 hours of purchase or stored frozen.

Storage

In the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Freezing after cooking is not recommended as it may alter the fish's flavor.
