Mackerel Lick-Mat Cream for Cats

A smooth mackerel cream to spread on the lick mat: an omega-3-rich snack that slows your cat down, helps them relax, and boosts hydration — one lick at a time.

Lick mats are a wonderful tool for cats: prolonged licking is a natural behaviour that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and slows down cats that tend to eat too quickly. By spreading this mackerel cream on the mat, you turn a simple snack into a calming activity. Mackerel provides omega-3 fatty acids for a healthy coat and skin, and its creamy consistency also helps your cat take in extra fluids.

Ingredients

  • 80 g steamed mackerel fillet, bone-free
  • 2–3 tablespoons of lukewarm water

Method

  1. Steam the mackerel for about 10 minutes, then carefully check for and remove any bones.
  2. Allow to cool slightly, then blend the flesh with the water, adding it a little at a time, until you have a smooth, spreadable cream.
  3. Spread a thin layer of cream onto the lick mat using the back of a spoon.
  4. Serve immediately, or place the mat in the freezer for 30 minutes — in summer this makes a refreshing snack that keeps your cat engaged for longer.

Notes

Mackerel is an excellent choice, but like all oily fish it should be given in moderation (1–2 times per week) to avoid excessive intake of thiaminase and mercury. Use only fresh, cooked fish with no added salt or oil. Wash the lick mat thoroughly after each use. This is an enrichment snack, not a meal: adjust the quantity according to your cat's weight.

Storage

The cream will keep in the refrigerator in a sealed jar for up to 2 days. You can also freeze it in single-portion silicone moulds and thaw one portion at a time as needed, spreading it fresh onto the mat.
