A first glance, it looks like a miniature tiger: vertical black stripes on a vibrant orange coat, powerful physique, intense gaze. It is the Toyger, one of the most recent cat breeds, born from a dream: to bring home "a tiger to pet".
## Origins
A very young breed: created in the '80s and '90s by American breeder Judy Sugden, daughter of the creator of the Bengal. The idea: to obtain a domestic cat with a coat identical to that of a tiger. Recognized by TICA in 2007.
## Appearance
- **Weight**: 4-7 kg.
- **Coat**: short, dense, shiny.
- **Color**: brown-orange (modified mackerel tabby), with well-defined vertical black stripes. The face also has "tiger-like" patterns.
- **Eyes**: small, deep, ranging from green to hazel.
- **Life expectancy**: 12-15 years.
## Character
- **Gentle**: despite its appearance, it is a sweet and patient cat.
- **Sociable**: with people, dogs, and children.
- **Intelligent**: learns commands, loves new games.
- **Active**: but balanced. Not as hyperactive as the Bengal.
- **Retriever**: many Toygers play fetch like dogs.
- **Water**: some Toygers love to play with water (a trait inherited from the Bengal).
## Needs
- **Mental stimulation**: a lot. Interactive games, puzzle feeders.
- **Companionship**: loves the family, suffers from prolonged loneliness.
- **Scratchers and trees**: essential. Appreciates height.
- **Grooming**: minimal, requires weekly brushing.

- Those wanting an independent or solitary cat.
- People out of the house all day.
## Price
Rare breed, especially in Europe: 1,500-3,000 euros. Very few serious breeders.
## What really matters
The Toyger is a masterpiece of genetic selection: wild beauty, domestic soul. If you dream of having "a tiger" at home without the risks of the jungle, the Toyger is the answer. A spectacular breed to discover.
