The Cymric

The Cymric is one of the most curious breeds in the feline world: it shares the same characteristic as the Manx (absent or almost absent tail), but with a long and soft coat. It resembles a small teddy bear without a tail. A fascinating rarity.

Origins

The Cymric originates from the Isle of Man (off the English coast), as a long-haired variant of the Manx. The “tailless” mutation has been natural on the island for centuries (probably from a single genetic mutation). The “long hair” gene comes from crosses with Norwegian cats brought by the Vikings.

The name “Cymric” comes from the Welsh “Cymru” (Wales), even though the breed is from the Isle of Man (perhaps a Celtic tribute).

Appearance

  • Weight: 4-6 kg.
  • Coat: medium-long, double layer, dense. All colors are accepted.
  • Tail: entirely absent (“rumpy”) to very short (“stumpy”). There are also variants with almost normal tails (“longy”).
  • Body: robust, round, with a higher hindquarters than forequarters.
  • Life expectancy: 12-14 years.

Character

  • Affectionate: very bonded to the family.
  • Calm: balanced, never hysterical.
  • Social: with people, children, other animals.
  • Intelligent: learns commands, loves fetch.

  • Grooming: brushed 2-3 times a week (long coat!).

Health

A breed with a particularity: the “tailless” gene can cause spinal deformities (Manx Syndrome) in homozygous individuals (practically, they only have two “rumpy”). For this reason:

  • The best breeders cross only “non-tailless × tailless”.
  • “Manx Syndrome” kittens either die or are euthanized in the early months.
  • Serious breeders work to reduce the risk.

Other predispositions: hip arthritis, some eye diseases.

Important: choose only certified breeders who conduct spinal checks.
