80% of adult dogs have dental problems. Cleaning your dog's teeth at home is the single most impactful action for their oral (and overall, given the correlation between dental issues and heart disease) health.
Why It’s Important
Plaque → tartar → gingivitis → periodontitis → oral tumors and systemic infections.
Bacteria from an inflamed mouth enter the bloodstream, damaging the heart, kidneys, liver. Dental cleaning extends the dog's life.
What You Need
Toothbrush
- Dog-specific: soft bristles, long handle
- Finger toothbrush: silicone, for dogs that do not tolerate a classic toothbrush
- For puppies: very soft silicone finger toothbrush
Cost: 5-15 €.
Toothpaste
Never human toothpaste. It contains fluoride and xylitol, toxic to dogs.
Use veterinary enzymatic toothpaste:
- Chicken, beef, malt (flavors for dogs)
- Does not foam
- Ingestible safely
Cost: 8-15 €.
How to Get Them Used to It (3 Weeks)
Week 1
- Touch the muzzle and lips with your finger when they are relaxed
- Treat after each touch
- 30 seconds a day
Week 2
- Gently lift the lip, touch a tooth
- Treat
- 1 minute a day
Week 3
- Introduce your finger with a bit of toothpaste
- Gently massage the gums
- 1-2 minutes a day
Week 4
- Replace your finger with the toothbrush
- Clean a few teeth, then treat
The Correct Technique
- Don’t open the mouth: work from the outside, under the lip
- Gentle circular movements at a 45° angle towards the gums
- Focus on canines and back molars (areas with the most plaque)
- 30-60 seconds total, once a day or every 2 days
- Treat at the end
Ideal Frequency
- Daily: gold standard
- 3-4 times a week: minimum effective
- Once a week: better than nothing, but insufficient
The Alternatives
If they absolutely refuse:
- VOHC certified dental treats (Veterinary Oral Health Council)
- Dental kibble (a format that cleans mechanically)
- Enzymatic dental sprays
- Professional scaling under anesthesia (every 2-3 years)
Signs That Require a Veterinarian
- Strong and persistent bad breath
- Red, bleeding gums
- Visible tartar (yellow-brown)
- Dog only eating on one side
- Drooling
What to Take Home
Cleaning your dog's teeth takes 60 seconds a day but is worth years of extra health. Start gradually, be patient, reward every progress. It becomes a painless routine in 4 weeks.
