Quando un cane è "anziano"? Dipende dalla taglia. Cani piccoli a 9-10 anni, cani medi a 7-8 anni, cani giganti già a 5-6 anni. Riconoscere i primi segnali fa una differenza enorme nella qualità di vita degli ultimi anni.
## I primi segnali
### Fisici
- **Coat graying** around the muzzle and eyebrows (early sign, physiological)
- **Reduction in spontaneous activity**: sleeps more, plays less
- **Difficulty jumping** into the car, on the couch, climbing stairs
- **Cataracts or lenticonus** (eyes turning bluish)
- **Hearing loss** (does not respond to its name unless you approach)
- **Change in coat** (drier, dull, thinning in areas)
### Comportamentali
- **Increased "clinginess"** (follows you more)
- **Rejection of new experiences** (does not want to visit new parks)
- **Sleep disturbances** (sleeps more during the day, restless at night)
- **Occasional confusion** (in advanced cases: gets lost in the house, does not recognize family members)
## Cosa cambia in alimentazione
- **Calories reduced by 20%** compared to adults (slowed metabolism)
- **More protein, not less** (contrary to a myth): seniors lose muscle mass
- **Essential omega-3** for joints and coat
- **Easily digestible food** (specific "senior" foods)
- **Smaller, more frequent meals** (3-4 a day)
- **Water always available**: kidneys begin to struggle
## Cosa cambia in esercizio
- **Shorter, more frequent walks** (3 times a day for 20-30 min) instead of 1-2 long ones
- **No intense sports**: agility, frisbee, long runs
- **Swimming is excellent** (zero impact on joints)
- **Therapeutic massages** after walks (owner can do this, 5 minutes)
## Controlli veterinari
Da senior, raccomandato:
- **General check-up every 6 months** (instead of 12)
- **Annual blood tests** (kidney, liver, thyroid)
- **Annual urine test**
- **Blood pressure** annually (seniors are more hypertensive than average)
- **Annual eye exam**
- **Dental cleaning** (under anesthesia if needed, safe under 12 years of age)
## Casa adatta
- **Non-slip rugs** on floors (damaged joints slip)
- **Orthopedic bed** with memory foam
- **Ramps** for couch, car, steps
- **Elevated bowls** if it has a painful neck
- **Water in multiple locations** (drinking on command can be an effort)
- **Night light** (vision deteriorates)
## Le medicine più frequenti
- **Anti-inflammatories** (carprofen, meloxicam) for joint pain
- **Chondroprotectors** (glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3) preventive and therapeutic
- **Nutraceuticals** for cognitive health (S-adenosylmethionine, antioxidants)
- **Subcutaneous fluid therapy** in chronically nephropathic patients
## Demenza senile (CDS)
Una forma di Alzheimer canino. Sintomi:
- Confusione e disorientamento (gira intorno, si perde in casa)
- Cambiamento del ciclo sonno-veglia
- Riduzione delle interazioni sociali
- Cambiamenti dell'appetito
- Incontinenza in cane prima pulito
**Diagnosi:** esclusione di altre cause + scala DISHA. **Terapia:** selegilina, omega-3, integratori specifici.
- Stable appetite?
- Ability to walk and relieve itself independently?
- Pain controlled by medication?
- Still recognizes the family?
- Has "good moments" more than "bad moments"?
If the answer is no to 3-4 points, it is time to discuss it with the veterinarian. Euthanasia, done with dignity, is the kindest thing.
## Mettendo tutto insieme
L'età avanzata del cane non è "il problema": è una fase della vita che richiede attenzione diversa. Più visite, alimentazione adattata, casa accessibile. Con queste accortezze, anche un cane anziano vive ancora 2-4 anni di buona qualità.
