The Italian Bracco is one of the oldest pointing breeds in the world and a true canine heritage of our Country. Its image appears in Renaissance art — it is depicted in paintings by great masters like Titian — testifying to a centuries-old presence alongside humans. Behind its noble appearance and sweet expression lies a highly versatile working dog.
History
Documented for centuries, the Italian Bracco is the result of a long Italian selection aimed at "pointing" hunting: the dog locates the game and freezes to signal its position to the hunter. The breed received official recognition from the FCI in the mid-20th century, but its roots are much older.
Appearance

- Coat: short and shiny, white-orange or white-brown
- Life expectancy: approximately 12-13 years
The "houndy" expression, with long ears and a gentle gaze, is one of its most beloved traits.
Character
It is a calm and sweet dog at home, balanced and family-friendly, with which it establishes a deep bond. However, this domestic calm should not be misleading: the Bracco remains a working dog with a strong need for movement and activities that stimulate its natural instincts.
Requirements: movement and space
- 2-3 hours of exercise daily, including walks, running, and activities
- Suitable spaces: it thrives in homes with gardens or in outdoor living
- Stimulation of hunting instincts through activities or canine sports
Without adequate physical and mental outlet, it can become restless and frustrated.
Health
Among the predispositions to be aware of are **hip dysplasia** and **gastric torsion (bloat)**, an emergency typical in large dogs with deep chests, which can be prevented by dividing meals and avoiding intense activity immediately after eating. Regular check-ups and breeders who test their breeding stock are essential.
Who it is suitable for
It is a wonderful companion for active families, outdoor enthusiasts, and, of course, for those who practice hunting or canine sports. It is less suitable for those leading a sedentary lifestyle or living in small spaces without the ability to ensure ample exercise.
